ACADEMIC STUFF
I have a PhD in Philosophy, working at Royal Holloway University of London as a Lecturer in Philosophy and Gender Studies. My research spans the areas of feminist philosophy, bioethics, queer theory, (meta)metaphysics, the philosophy of science, and the epistemology of logic. Most recently I have been focussing on social/political issues on gender diversity and reproduction, leading a project on 'Trans/Forming Pregnancy'. My academic publications can be viewed on PhilPeople and I have written multiple times for magazine Aeon. I am the editor of the book 'Women of Ideas' published with Oxford University Press which is a selection of interviews with women from Philosophy Bites. I gave my own Philosophy Bites interview on the topic of 'nothing'. My forthcoming book ‘What's in a Doughnut Hole?’ (to be published by Icon in 2025) provides philosophical food for thought on topics such as nothing - I have quite the appetite for the abyss. In terms of affiliations, I am co-Director of the Society for Women in Philosophy UK, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, on the Council for the Royal Institute of Philosophy, and a Trade Union Committee member for RHUL UCU. As an author and public academic, I am represented by Ben Clark at The Soho Agency.
ARTY STUFF
Alongside my academic work, I compose and produce ambient electronic music under the artist name Masukii (duo with Matthew Nicholson). Our music is signed to Universal and Ninja Tune Production Music where it is available in their libraries for sync and downloading, and can otherwise be found in the background of a variety of TV series, films, and adverts. You can listen to all of our music on Soundcloud (and some of it is on YouTube). I am classically trained on the piano and violin (and to a lesser extent, in singing), but these days I mostly play the handpan (also known as a hangdrum) and tongue drum. I also drum on other surfaces such as tables, laptops, legs, and steering wheels. Sometimes I combine the above with a looper pedal to create soundscapes, and once I was brave/bored enough to do so on a live show during lockdown (otherwise I never perform). I also write quite intense and sometimes silly poetry, and frequently attempt life drawing. My artwork ‘Forgotten Parts’ (depicting a placenta and umbilical cord) was exhibited at the John Hansard Gallery and the Winchester School of Art Gallery, though due to the pieces use of menstrual blood, hair, and rotting petals, it needed to be binned after that...
